Careem Co-Founder Magnus Olsson Says Purpose Is the Foundation of Building Great Companies

3 Min Read

Magnus Olsson, co-founder and Managing Director of Careem, believes that successful companies are built around purpose rather than financial outcomes alone.

Speaking during a session titled “Beyond the Blueprint” at Hub71’s Impact Event 2026, Olsson reflected on Careem’s evolution from a startup into one of the Middle East’s most influential technology companies.

Purpose Before Profit

According to Olsson, entrepreneurship is inherently risky, with most startups failing to achieve long-term success. He argued that founders need a mission strong enough to sustain them through uncertainty and setbacks.

For Careem, that mission has remained unchanged since the company’s earliest days: simplifying people’s lives while building an organization capable of inspiring others.

That philosophy initially shaped Careem’s ride-hailing business before expanding into areas such as grocery delivery, payments and other digital services designed to remove friction from everyday life.

The UAE as a Global Launch Pad

Olsson also highlighted the UAE’s growing importance as a base for companies seeking regional and international expansion.

He identified three critical factors that make the country attractive for entrepreneurs: access to markets, access to capital and access to talent.

The UAE’s geographic position provides businesses with access to large consumer markets within a relatively short flight radius, while Abu Dhabi has become one of the world’s most important centers for investment capital.

At the same time, the country’s quality of life and business environment continue to attract international talent across sectors including technology, finance and entrepreneurship.

One Region, Many Markets

Despite the opportunities available across the Middle East, Olsson cautioned against viewing the region as a single unified market.

He explained that every country and city presents unique consumer behaviors, regulatory environments and operational challenges that require dedicated local expertise and market-specific strategies.

Careem’s expansion across markets including Pakistan and Egypt relied heavily on empowering local teams with a deep understanding of customer needs and local business dynamics.

According to Olsson, success in one city does not automatically translate into success elsewhere, making local execution a critical component of regional scaling strategies.

Hub71 Continues to Bring Ecosystem Leaders Together

The discussion took place during Hub71’s annual Impact Event, which brings together founders, investors, corporate leaders and policymakers from across the global innovation ecosystem.

The 2026 edition of the event was held on June 9-10 at Manarat Al Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi.

Why It Matters

Careem’s journey from a regional startup to one of the Middle East’s largest technology success stories has become a blueprint for many founders across emerging markets. Olsson’s comments reflect a broader shift within entrepreneurship toward mission-driven businesses, while also highlighting the UAE’s growing role as a global hub for startups seeking access to talent, funding and international markets.
