U.S. Launches $5 Billion AI Research Initiative to Accelerate Scientific Breakthroughs

The United States is launching a US$5 billion artificial intelligence research initiative aimed at accelerating scientific discovery by combining advanced AI models, federal supercomputing resources, and some of the world’s largest government datasets.

The program is designed to help researchers address longstanding scientific challenges, including identifying the root causes of chronic diseases, accelerating drug discovery, and developing more durable construction materials.

Federal Agencies Unite Around AI for Science

According to White House technology adviser Michael Kratsios, scientists participating in the initiative will gain access to the U.S. Department of Energy’s supercomputers, artificial intelligence tools, specialized datasets, and other computational resources needed to conduct AI-powered scientific experiments.

The initiative brings together 15 federal agencies, including the Departments of Health and Human Services, Energy, Transportation, Defense, and the Interior, in an effort to coordinate AI research across multiple scientific disciplines.

“The White House is bringing together agencies working across different fields and helping make them part of a broader effort to use artificial intelligence for science,” Kratsios said.

Expanding Access to Government Data

Artificial intelligence models require large volumes of high-quality data to identify patterns, generate predictions, and automate complex analyses.

The U.S. government maintains extensive scientific databases covering areas such as chemicals, critical minerals, environmental information, and healthcare records. Officials say the new initiative will enable researchers to train AI models on these datasets to accelerate scientific discovery across multiple disciplines.

Research Funding Strategy Under Review

A White House report authored by Kratsios also outlines plans by the Trump administration to reshape how federal research funding is distributed by placing greater emphasis on supporting individual scientists and AI-driven research projects rather than relying primarily on traditional university-based funding models.

The proposal follows broader efforts by the administration to increase oversight of federal research spending. Earlier attempts to modify research grant funding have faced legal challenges, with federal courts limiting changes to National Institutes of Health funding policies.

Microsoft Joins the Initiative

Microsoft announced it will support the initiative by providing US$40 million in artificial intelligence computing credits over the next three years, helping researchers gain access to the computational resources required for large-scale AI projects.

The partnership highlights the growing collaboration between government institutions and technology companies as artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly important tool for scientific research and innovation.
