Masdar City Launches GCC’s First Commercial Shared Life Sciences Laboratory

3 Min Read

Masdar City has announced the launch of Biosphere Labs, a new shared laboratory facility designed to support biotechnology companies, researchers and startups by providing access to advanced scientific infrastructure without the need to build independent laboratories.

The facility, developed in partnership with M42 and Attentive Science, was unveiled during the BIO International Convention 2026 in San Diego. According to the partners, Biosphere Labs is the first commercially scaled shared laboratory of its kind in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Lowering Barriers for Biotechnology Innovation

Building laboratory infrastructure is often one of the biggest challenges for early-stage biotechnology companies due to the significant investment required in equipment, facilities and regulatory compliance. Biosphere Labs aims to reduce these barriers by offering flexible laboratory space, scientific equipment and operational support within a shared environment.

The model allows startups, research institutions and life sciences companies to begin research activities more quickly while reducing capital expenditure and accelerating product development.

Supporting Abu Dhabi’s Growing Life Sciences Ecosystem

Biosphere Labs forms part of Abu Dhabi’s expanding HELM (Health, Endurance, Longevity and Medicine) cluster, launched in 2025 to strengthen research, biotechnology, pharmaceutical manufacturing, clinical development and precision medicine within the emirate.

Researchers using the facility will also gain access to Abu Dhabi’s wider innovation ecosystem, including healthcare organizations, investors, research institutions and commercialization partners.

A Collaborative Model for Scientific Research

Beyond laboratory space, the initiative is designed to encourage collaboration between startups, established biotechnology companies and research organizations by creating an environment where scientific expertise, technology and investment can converge.

Officials say the facility is intended to accelerate the journey from laboratory research to commercial healthcare applications while helping position Abu Dhabi as a regional destination for biotechnology innovation.

Building on an Expanding Innovation Network

Biosphere Labs joins an expanding network of life sciences organizations already operating in Masdar City, including the Abu Dhabi Biobank, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Oxford Nanopore Technologies and Insilico Medicine.

The growing concentration of biotechnology companies reflects Abu Dhabi’s long-term strategy of developing a globally competitive life sciences sector supported by advanced research infrastructure and international partnerships.

Why It Matters

Shared laboratory facilities are becoming increasingly important for biotechnology ecosystems worldwide because they significantly reduce the cost and complexity of scientific research. By giving startups and researchers immediate access to world-class laboratory infrastructure, Biosphere Labs can help accelerate innovation, attract international companies and strengthen Abu Dhabi’s ambition to become a leading regional hub for biotechnology, precision medicine and healthcare innovation.
